Open Question: so i returned my license plate to dmv and want it back?

so when i bought my mustang i put it on the insurance and was issued a license plate but the i took it off the insurance and i cancelled the license plate and took it back to the dmv and now i want to put my mustang back on the insurance. do i go back to the dmv and get my same license plate? what am i supposed to do??...
